Spring Roof Maintenance Tips From Roof Plus

Spring has sprung, and we here at Roof Plus couldn’t be more thrilled. Call us crazy, but we prefer to work on your home with the sun out and birds chirping over rain, sleet, and snow. With the season’s change comes a whole new set of roofing maintenance checklists and gutter cleaning sessions to get ready for the spring rain. Today’s post is dedicated to setting you up for success during your spring cleaning. Often, you’ll find some wear and tear issues. Read on if you are interested in finding out how to best handle your gutter, roof, and window damage issues that you may find.

Storm Damage

Storm damage is something that you really must check for after the winter, and this is especially true considering the winter we have had in New Jersey. Checking for storm damage is extremely important after a hail storm, as well. Look for busted or missing shingles across the breadth of your roof. Replace them as soon as you can in order to prevent needing a roof leak repair.

Moss

Considering how humid it can get, you’ll need to look for moss or algae that might have started growing on the roof. The moss or algae can be problematic if untreated. They tend to push up the shingles on the top of the roof, and can even move down to the siding and be an issue there as well. If moss has already spread, consider giving us at Roof Plus a call for your roof replacement and siding repair needs.

Flashing

Flashing, in reference to roofing, refers to the thin pieces of impervious material which are installed to prevent the passing of water into your home. If you have a little bit of roofing knowledge, check the flashing on your roof. In particular, look at your chimney or skylight, if you have them. Look around the vent pipes and other areas where flashing has been installed. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure when it comes to roof repair!

Branches

You’ll want to go ahead and either trim or remove those low-hanging branches hanging from trees that are close to your roof. A proactive approach is best in this case, in order to prevent damage to your roof and the siding of your home.

Siding Services

WindDamage

It can get windy around here around the Jersey Shore area. Wind damage can do some serious damage to the integrity of a roof. After a windstorm you should check the roof for curled or missing shingles, replacing them as soon as you can. Make sure you remove any debris you find, big and small.

Spot Checks

If you have a tar and gravel roof, check it for any surface-bare areas. The best thing to do in this case is to cover the exposed areas with pea gravel. That is a minor issue which you can fix on your own. But if you encounter a “spongy” looking spot on your roof, consider having a specialist come out and diagnose the issue for you, because you may be in need of roof replacement or repair.

Check Your Gutters

More affordable than a complete gutter replacement, checking your gutters consistently is a practice we cannot recommend enough. Checking for loose, leaky, or clogged gutters is a good place to start. You might find your gutters have flooded if there is incorrect drainage from where the gutters catch the water. Your gutters will fail if there are leaks or your gutters are loose. If you find yourself out of your depth, give us a call; gutter replacement, gutter repair, and gutter cleaning are all our specialties.

Soffits and Fascias

Fascias are metal or wooden boards found underneath the eavestrough or along the lining of the roof. Soffits, conversely, are the wood or metal panels that can be found running along the underside of your roof. Now that we’ve successfully defined our terms, you need to know that checking these areas often goes overlooked while doing a routine spring maintenance roof check. If you find any holes or soft spots you will need to replace them.

Ice Dams

If you find a leak in your home coming through your roof, you will need to check for water damage and ice dams. When snow melts and cannot drain properly, an ice dam is what occurs. You’ll need to address this problem appropriately and immediately, otherwise it will end up costing you more in the long run. Consider one of our roofing specialists coming out to get a pair of seasoned eyes on the issue.
